PGFTU Launches the1st of May Day Statement with Statistics on the Reality of Workers in Palestine

Palestine General Federation of Trade Unions released its statement on the reality of workers in Palestine on May 1st, 2024, International Workers’ Day, during a conference held in Ramallah. This comes after seven months (208 days) of ongoing Israeli aggression in Gaza and the West Bank.

Sa’d has presented various statistics concerning workers, notably the number of breadwinners killed in the past year, 2023, which amounted to 113 martyrs. In 2024, until the month of April, 10 workers lost their lives, including 7 in work-related accidents. Additionally, there were martyrs among the breadwinners who fell victim to the Israeli occupation’s policy, which tightens the grip on workers through continuous assaults, arrests, and shootings during their commute to and from work. Three workers were among them: one from Qalqilya who was martyred in Hadarim Prison due to the harsh detention conditions that disregard the prisoners’ health, another from Gaza who died of despair over his family’s situation in Jericho’s shelters, and the third while returning from work in the town of Dahiriyeh, south of Hebron, after being assaulted by occupation forces yesterday, Tuesday, April 30th, 2024.
Sa’d also confirmed that the cases of detention reached 5,100, whether the worker was released or not. These detentions affected Palestinian workers from Gaza and the West Bank, either from their workplaces within the occupied territories, from shelters in the West Bank, during their attempts to return to Gaza, or while commuting to their workplaces.

Sa’d further explained that more than 235,000 Palestinian workers employed within the occupied territories ceased working for nearly 7 months. He added that their monthly losses amounted to 1.35 billion shekels, leading to a rise in the unemployment rate in Palestine to 500,000 jobless individuals.

Sa’d stated in the statement issued by Palestine General Federation of Trade Unions that
The labor movement decided to cancel all activities on May 1st because the voices of martyrs, including children, women, elders, and youth, resonate with the flow of blood and the ongoing crimes of the occupation for 208 days. He affirmed that the ultimate goal is the right of the Palestinian people to determine their destiny and declare their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, after which protection and social justice can be achieved.

Governor of Ramallah and Al-Bireh, Dr. Leila Ghannam, praised the Palestinian workers, both men and women, in the West Bank and Gaza for their resilience. She also commended the universities in various countries that stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people amidst the harsh conditions they face due to the ongoing crimes of the occupation. Ghannam emphasized the importance of the conference held by PGFTU Unions to shed light on the reality of workers in Palestine and the breadwinners who sacrificed their lives to support their families.

In turn, the Palestinian Minister of Labor, Dr. Enas Al-Atrash, stated that this year’s Labor Day comes amidst exceptional circumstances due to the significant injustice the Palestinian people are facing. She affirmed that the Ministry of Labor will exert efforts to stand by the workers amid the difficult economic and political situation, especially in Gaza, and the horrors of the destructive war on the labor market, which have led to increased unemployment and poverty rates. Al-Atrash emphasized the need to achieve social justice for workers, monitor the implementation of minimum wages, provide health and occupational safety requirements, and collaborate with production entities. This comes following decisions made at the Arab Labor Conference aimed at revitalizing the economic situation and developing production in the Palestinian labor market.

The Director-General of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Jamal Jawabra, delivered his speech, affirming that the economic movement faces increasing challenges every year due to the escalating measures of the occupation against the Palestinian people. These measures include the closure of checkpoints, restrictions on the movement of citizens between cities, and their regulation, as well as the cessation of work by workers within the occupied territories, and the confiscation of clearance funds by the occupation government, which has resulted in delays in paying employees’ salaries. All of these factors have acted as obstacles to the Palestinian national economy and contributed to its destruction.

Member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization and Head of the Popular Organizations Department, Dr. Wasel Abu Youssef, praised the stance of the General Federation of Palestinian Workers’ Unions, which canceled the activities on May 1st in commemoration of the martyrs in Gaza and the West Bank. He affirmed that the comprehensive war, the liquidation of the Palestinian people, the unleashing of settlers, and the policies of land theft by the occupation are aimed at weakening and harming the Palestinian people. However, the resilient Palestinian people have highlighted their cause to all peoples of the world, especially the new generation of university students worldwide who support the Palestinian cause and aim to stop the bloodshed and aggression by the occupation forces against the Palestinian people.
