PGFTU Praises International Court of Justice Decision on the Right to Strike

The (PGFTU) praised the historic decision issued by the regarding the right to strike under Convention No. 87, considering it a significant and transformative milestone in international labour law and a major victory for trade union rights and freedoms worldwide.

In a press statement issued today, the federation affirmed that the advisory opinion issued by the Court clearly establishes that the right to strike is an integral and inseparable part of freedom of association, rather than a separate right, bringing an end to years of legal and labour-related debate surrounding this issue at the international level.

PGFTU stressed that this historic decision restores the principles of social justice within international law and strengthens the ability of trade unions to defend workers’ rights and interests in the face of policies and legislation aimed at restricting or weakening trade union work.

The federation also commended the leading role played by the (ITUC), alongside international sectoral unions and human rights organizations, in advancing the recognition of this right at the international judicial level through continuous efforts and legal advocacy that contributed to achieving this historic accomplishment.

PGFTU emphasized that the decision provides an important legal instrument for trade unions around the world to defend the right to strike, confront unjustified restrictions on trade union freedoms, and challenge violations targeting workers and their representative organizations.

The Secretary-General of PGFTU, Shaher Saed, stated that this decision represents the outcome of long-standing struggles led by the international trade union movement in defense of workers’ rights, praising the steadfast positions of the global labour movement under the umbrella of the ITUC in promoting social justice and protecting the rights of the working class.

Saed added that this achievement constitutes a historic victory added to the record of workers’ struggles worldwide and reflects the strength of international trade union solidarity and its ability to bring about real change within the framework of international law and trade union freedoms.

The Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions renewed its commitment to continuing trade union and national struggle, while strengthening international solidarity with the labour movement in pursuit of justice, human dignity, and the protection of workers’ rights in Palestine and around the world.
